My name is Lydia LeBlanc (she/they) and I am a self taught visual artist and poet residing in Kijpuktuk (halifax) from amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton).
The style I’ve come to adopt is that of exaggerated creatures with drooping eyes and lips, a symbolic representation of how I was feeling when I leaned on art as a healthy coping strategy. My creatures are ugly by any traditional standard but to me their beautiful distorted faces capture emotions that are difficult to express. I tend to draw from elements in nature to channel into my sculptures, masks and in my writing. I find inspiration in nature’s ability to balance the grotesque and gory with the beautiful and tranquil and attempt to use this juxtaposition to express aspects of myself that relate to it. With antlers and horns, third eyes and roots I love exaggerating real people with my mask work, turning them into an uncanny creature. The exploration of the indescribable aspects of death, nature and the human form through my art and poetry allows for a catharsis within myself.
